See people, They don't understand. No girlfriends, they can't understand. Your grandsons, they won't understand. On top of this, I ain't ever gonna understand.

Today I produced some illustrations of the wonderful band the Strokes. I've decided i'm just going to focus on one band rather than several.
Pics taken on my phone, I couldn't fit them in the scanner! So you can pretty much see the shadow of my arm in every picture.
I've actually realised that I get so much drawing done in the comfort of a living room rather than in class, this is mainly down to being distracted far too easily!
also, music really helps :)

Barcelona snapshots

Barcelona, July 2010. I only just got this film processed after nearly a year!

I love the novelty of having to use a disposable camera, the photos always seem that much more personal and the colours of the film add a retro aesthetic to each picture. admittedly I did feel like a bit of an old school tourist using one of these!

She was still the point of the turning world, man.

I adore the film The Virgin Suicides by Sofia Coppola, and found some really lovely illustrated film posters by artists on the internet.

The premise of the film is based around a group of teenage boys who become obsessed with the lives of five sisters in suburban america during the mid 70s, sheltered by their overbearing parents and close friendship for one another, a unique backdrop of warm summer nights,  pastel shades, and sumptuous cinematography comes a sense of overwhelming familiarity and nostalgia, a coming of age story which leads to an untimely demise for all five sisters.
Air and The Hollies among others provide a hypnotic and haunting soundtrack.

Poster design and Illustration by Jaime Anderson

Illustration and poster design by Adam Juresko

LA Graphic Design

I like how these illustrated posters showcase subtle key feature's that are significant within the film, Juresko's poster shows the family homes fence, not only giving a sense of claustrophobia, plays a vital connection with the first and youngest to die of the Lisbon sisters.

Andersons poster exhibits the Lisbon sisters long blonde hair, one of their discerning and desirable features.

Perhaps the most obvious visual connection between the poster and film is one of the sisters legs suspended mid air, suggests one of the suicides is a hanging.

The poster by LA graphic design is one of my favourites, the choice of colours are muted and subtle and the flower they are 'blooming' from may represent coming of age, vulnerability and their close connection between each other.

Home Sweet Home

Yet some more amazing American musicians.
Motley Crue.

If theres one music video that describes the hair raising leather clad eye-wateringly-neon esque epitome of 80's glam rock, this would be it.

Enjoy

Devendra Banhart

I love this man and his music.

Devendra Banhart performing 'It's a Sight to Behold' on Jools Holland

Oh and he draws too

"I make very little money doing both things," he says of his songwriting and visual art, "but I make more money doing visual art."

Colour experimentation

Hendrix

Illustration idea for the project

I need to re-do the hand! hands are so hard to get right, eek.

Inspiration

I'm going to base my American project on some influential and inspirational musicians, Hendrix and Muddy Waters being among the few that I am going to illustrate, Hendrix was influenced by Muddy Waters energetic 'Chicago blues' music. Illustration will be my main focus on this project, and maybe even experimenting with type as well.

Anthony Burrill workshop; We had a go at producing a zine, using copies of Burrill's work and making quirky collages as well as being able to add a personal hand drawn element to our zine.
